Stay safe at home.On your terms.
Your home doesn’t have to look like a medical equipment showroom.
Practical equipment recommendations from a licensed Occupational Therapist — chosen for how they work in real homes, not how impressive they look in medical catalogs. Discreet, budget-conscious, and always dignity-first.

Safe equipment should
blend in — not take over.
Most home safety guides treat your living room like a hospital room. The equipment is clinical, bulky, and the first thing any visitor notices. It doesn’t have to be that way.
The right piece of equipment, chosen thoughtfully, does its job quietly. You get the support you need. Your home stays yours.
Every recommendation on this site starts with one question: what’s the least intrusive solution that actually works?
Credentials, Not Commissions
Recommendations are driven by 30 years of clinical evidence — not affiliate rates. Which is why I also explore Thrift Stores, Flea Markets, Communities, Friends and Neighbors as options for second hand and free items.
The Second Hand Principle
Always check your item has all of it’s screws, is not rusty, feels sturdy, and has its rubber pieces on the end of each leg. After you find the right piece, all that’s left to make it yours is some bleach and some elbow grease!
Minimum Footprint
The goal is always the smallest, least visible solution that solves the safety problem.
I Hope You Find Better
If you find a smarter solution than what I suggest, that’s a win. Your independence matters more than my recommendations.
“A fall prevention plan isn’t about fear — it’s about freedom. The right equipment means you keep choosing how you live.
— THE OT BEHIND SAFEHOMEOT
Thirty years of seeing what goes wrong — so you don’t have to.
I’m a licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR/L), and I’ve spent more than thirty years providing patient care in Acute Care/ICU, Long Term Acute Care (LTAC), Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab., Home Health, Skilled Nursing Facilities and Assisted Living Facilities. I see the aftermath of home-related injuries every week. Falls, post-surgical setbacks, the quiet exhaustion of families trying to manage a recovery nobody prepared them for. I’ve had thousands of conversations at bedsides and in therapy gyms, pulling up pictures on my phone to show patients what a toilet safety frame actually looks like, or why a raised toilet seat from a thrift store might do exactly the same job as the one in the online medical catalog.
SafeHomeOT is a labor of love — and honestly, an homage. To every patient who pushed back on my suggestions and found something better. To every family who figured it out their own way and shared their discoveries with me. To every person who taught me that the best solution is the one that fits your life, your home, and your sense of who you are — not the one that looks most clinical. And to those patients who allowed me to see their interesting and wise true self, often much younger in mind than the body they have right now.
The advice you’ll find here comes from years of listening and learning what actually works when people go home. I review everything through a clinical lens, not a commission one. I offer recommendations for finding equipment free, second hand, and full price, which for smaller items, may still be cheaper than your durable medical equipment co-pay with your insurance, and insurance does not typically cover much in this area. My goal is always the smallest, least intrusive solution that actually solves the problem — being mindful of your budget; because your home should still feel like yours, and budget should not keep you from finding the equipment you need.
Use this site as a starting point, not a prescription. Take what’s useful, leave what isn’t, and trust yourself to figure out what works for you. 👋
